Dr. A. V. Baliga College Of Commerce was established in 1966 as a pioneer institution in the field of Business Education. It is one of the prominent educational institutions managed by the KANARA College Society which has 5 other institutions under its management.
The College is situated on a 38 acre land at Kumta along with the other institutions and is recognized by the UGC under 2f and 12B in 1996. The College is a grant in aid institution and affiliated to the Karnataka University. The College defines its goals as continuous up-gradation of knowledge, skills and human values of its teachers and students. Equally emphatic are the numerous objectives defined to lead the students to success and excellence in the field of Commerce and Management studies
In 1960s Uttara Kannada was an utterly backwoods for a majority of bright and aspiring young scholars of the district, higher education in Commerce and Management was inaccessible and a matter of dream. The history of Dr. A. V. Baliga college of Commerce, Kumta is the history of translation of the distant dream into a practical proposition and eventual realization in 1966. If the late Shri L. S. Kamat and late Shri N.T.Hegde and other local luminaries put their heads together about the starting of a college, the first ever independent commerce college in the district, the late Dr. A. V. Baliga played the role of Providence in finding the wherewithal for the firm establishment of the college. Further, considering the growing importance of management education the horizontal expansion of the college was took place by establishing BBA (UG) course in June 1998 and M.Com (PG) Course in August 2010 on self financing basis.
Core values of the college-aptly summed up in its emblem which bears the motto Prajwalito Jnanamaya Pradeepah are commitment to education and social justice, integrity towards self and society and creativity in thought and approach. With its well equipped classrooms, computer laboratories, well qualified staff and facilities for sports and extra curricular activities, the institution is geared to provide an ambiance of creativity and innovation. The college has a well-conceived plan for monitoring student progress and has instituted several student support programmes. The standard of its library reflects the high standard of commerce and management education imparted in the college. The college library is a pride of the institution, has an impressive collection of 31000 books and 20 Journals and facilities like Digital Library, Web Library(Online Library 24 x 7), Audio Visual Library, Current Desk and Service Like Research Activity Support, Job Alerts, e-Book Exhibition, Video Tour of Library as its highlights.
The institution with its stated motto of outreaching the disadvantaged youth of the district has mostly been successful in not compromising on its fundamental purpose of providing opportunities of higher education to the marginalized in our society. And yet it has established itself as a noteworthy center with potential for excellence and distinction in scholarship and sports.
The Managing Committee of the college is consisting of eminent and educated persons drawn from different professions those who look after the overall development of the college. The Principal carries out the internal administration with the assistance of the teaching and administrative staff.
The College has produced a good number of eminent personalities in different fields of life. The College has imparted quality education in Commerce for the past 50 years and Business Administration for the last 17 years and M.Com for the last 07 years. The college is affiliated to Karnataka University and hence follows the syllabi prescribed by the University. The College offers two undergraduates Courses B.Com and BBA with optional subjects in Costing, Taxation, Banking, Finance and Marketing and one Postgraduate Course M.Com.
